When to Fertilize Your Lawn in Austin, TX

January 28, 20265 min readBy Grass Works Austin

Fertilizing your lawn at the wrong time is one of the most common — and costly — lawn care mistakes in Austin. Apply fertilizer too early in spring and you risk stimulating tender growth that gets damaged by a late frost. Apply it during summer drought stress and you can burn the grass. Apply it too late in fall and you encourage growth that won't harden off before winter.

The right fertilization schedule for Austin lawns is dictated by the growth cycle of warm-season grasses and the specific climate patterns of Central Texas. Here's the month-by-month guide our team uses for our maintenance clients across the Austin metro and Highland Lakes area.

Austin Lawn Fertilization Calendar

February — Pre-Emergent Application

February is not the time for fertilizer — it's the time for pre-emergent weed control. Apply a granular pre-emergent herbicide in late February to create a barrier against summer annual weeds like crabgrass and goosegrass. Do not fertilize in February; your lawn is still dormant and cannot use the nutrients effectively.

April — First Fertilization of the Year

Once soil temperatures reach 65°F consistently — typically in mid-to-late April in Austin — it's time for the first fertilization of the year. Use a balanced fertilizer with a ratio like 15-5-10 (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) or a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer. This application jump-starts the lawn's growth after winter dormancy and sets it up for a strong summer.

June — Summer Fertilization

A second fertilization in early June provides the nutrients your lawn needs to power through the summer heat. Use a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer to avoid burning the grass during hot weather. Do not fertilize if the lawn is under drought stress — wait until after a rain or irrigation cycle.

August — Optional Mid-Summer Application

An optional light fertilization in August can help sustain your lawn through the end of summer. Use a low-nitrogen, high-potassium fertilizer to strengthen the grass's drought and heat tolerance. Skip this application if the lawn is stressed or if you're in the middle of a drought.

September — Fall Fertilization

September is one of the most important fertilization windows of the year. A fall application helps the lawn recover from summer stress, build root reserves for winter, and maintain color as long as possible before dormancy. Use a fertilizer with a higher potassium content to harden the grass for winter.

October–November — No Fertilization

Do not fertilize after mid-October. Late-season nitrogen stimulates new growth that won't harden off before the first frost, making the grass vulnerable to freeze damage. Let the lawn transition naturally into dormancy.
